We asked Google's AI to pick an SEO agency

Then I opened the pages it cited. Live Wednesday, Oct 21.

Hey friends,

On Friday we asked Google's AI Mode a simple question: "what is the best B2B SEO agency." That's my own category, so I wanted to see who it would pick and why.

It gave a short list, and every pick came with a little source chip. When we opened those sources, the first three weren't agency websites. Two were "best agencies" lists published by other people, and one was a YouTube video.

That's why I keep saying citations are the name of the game now. The AI isn't only reading your site. It's reading what everyone else publishes about your category, and it picks from there.

On Wednesday I'm going live to put that screenshot on screen, walk through what I'd do about it, and show you the system we built to go after those citations.

The New Rules of AI Search: AEO and SEO Strategies to Get Found

If you want a head start, try this before Wednesday. Ask ChatGPT the question your buyers would ask. Check whether you're mentioned, who is, and which pages it cites. If a competitor shows up and you don't, open the pages it cites, because that's what the model trusts.

When we ran that kind of test across about 400 buyer-intent queries for one client, they weren't showing up, and aggregators and competitors were getting cited instead. I'll show you what we're doing about it on Wednesday, along with the checks that keep our content bot from shipping slop and the 12-week scorecard I use to judge all of it on free consultations.

You can drop questions in as we go, and I'll answer as many as I can live.

Eric
