Deep Dive: Technology In Service Businesses

Many service businesses claim to have game-changing technology.

For example, holding companies like Publicis Groupe ($26B market cap) claim to have an AI product plus they're investing $326M into AI over the next few years.

But have you heard of any service-based business doing tech well? I haven't.

When I think about Accenture, Deloitte, McKinsey, etc., they're known for providing services.

Tech companies like Meta and Salesforce are focused on the tech first.

When I hear of smaller agencies claiming that they've built a 'game-changing AI platform', I snicker.

Because they're spreading their focus while building a below-average product. Trust me, I've done this before.

If you're a services business, focus on the service first. If you're a product business, focus on the product first.

But never conflate the two. It doesn't work 99% of the time.
