Is job hopping over? The Wall Street Journal says yes.
Here's my take.
A year ago, I posted a video with Your Rich BFF that blew up into my most viral video.
She made a bold claim: “If you’re not switching jobs every two years, you’re leaving money on the table.” (Click here to watch just the snippet).
At the time, it made sense. The advice was simple: Jump from one company to another, and you could rack up 10-15% raises with each move.
But fast forward to today, and things have shifted.
The Wall Street Journal recently published a study showing that the wage growth for job switchers is shrinking fast. Job hoppers and stayers are now experiencing almost identical salary growth.
So, what changed? Here’s my take:
The best companies know that it’s more expensive to replace someone than to promote them.
They want you to grow with them.
And if you're consistently performing at a high level, they will go the extra mile to keep you and you will continue to deepen your expertise.
This is where job-hopping advice starts to crumble. If you're bouncing from job to job every couple of years, ask yourself: How deep is your expertise really getting?
And if you’re always moving, how can you prove you’re a true asset to the company? There’s something to be said about loyalty and building real impact.
The reality is, if you’re truly excelling at what you do, your company is likely going to fight to keep you. They’re going to offer the promotions, raise the incentives, and help you grow.
Because they know that the cost of losing a high performer is far higher than the cost of rewarding them.
And, if you're aiming for the C-suite—real growth comes from sticking it out. Those who climb the ranks from within typically make it to the top.
Sure, you might switch jobs once in a while, but don’t expect to get there by jumping every two years.
There’s a reason why it’s a black mark for any recruiter when they see a job hopper.
To building a lasting legacy,
Eric Siu
P.S. If you're tired of job hopping —it might be worth building something of your own.
