Deep Dive: Storytelling
The real reason content gets millions of views?
Storytelling.
But that's such a loaded word. It feels like theory when people tell you that 'you just need to be a good storyteller'.
Storytellers captivate groups, they control the energy of a dinner party, but how do you actually get better at storytelling?
The other night, I was talking to a few Hollywood screenwriters at a networking event.
One guy I talked to said "It's simple. It's like working out. I wake up at 5:30 in the morning and I start writing at around 6:30am until 8:30am.
Sometimes, when I get back from my full-time gig, I spend another hour or two writing."
Muscles aren't built in a day, just like how storytelling muscles aren't built in a day.
If you're spending 2 hours a day on a craft, your compound growth is going to get you to a pretty high level in a year.
The bad news is you probably don't have 2 hours a day to dedicate to this out the gate. The good news is that you can simply create a 'story bank'.
A story bank can be a simple spreadsheet where you note the most interesting thing that happened to you each day and the date in separate columns. If you have time to elaborate on the story, great. Put that in another column.
At a minimum, you're building the muscle of recalling interesting things that happen to you.
Eventually, you'll have a list of 'greatest hits' and you'll be a more natural storyteller.
We all have interesting things that happen to us, we just don't think about it.
