There are two types of friends:

1. Utility friends

These people are purely transactional. They clearly need something from you and usually it’s related to money. If they don’t see clear utility for advancement, they will treat you like a lesser being.

I’ve seen this with one prominent entrepreneur, he fawns over the people that have more money than he does and is always trying to get on calls with them. When someone clearly has less than him, he ignores them.

2. ‘Friend’ friends

These are your real friends who will love you unconditionally. They love you for who you are despite your flaws and will help you through tough times.

To them, it doesn’t matter what your net worth is. Your character means infinitely more. You just love hanging out with them. It’s a no pressure environment.

In the business world, it’s sometimes hard to discern between the two. But trust me, you’ll know.

And when you find the ‘friend’ friends, do everything you can to nurture those relationships.
